DB Lampman is a multidisciplinary artist who often uses movement and sculptural costumes as a way to explore the connection between herself and the world around her. We Carry the Water Within Us features a costume made by the artist in which she wears a large, heavy sculptural harness that has multiple branching arms with skeletal hands that extend outward from her as she walks along the Sunset Park waterfront, connecting industrial and manufacturing spaces to the reclaimed natural areas in the park. The piece speaks to the relationship of our bodies to our built environment and the labor it takes to cultivate land, goods, and products for human use. The path of the performance follows a history of human labor used for producing human goods, including goods for war and destruction. Beginning at the Brooklyn Army Terminal, where weapons were produced and shipped out to war and ending at Bush Terminal, a former oil refinery that has undergone years of brownfield restoration, We Carry the Water Within Us, reminds viewers that we all carry the burden and responsibility for what we produce and how we deal with the aftermath of that production.
DB Lampman received her BFA from Maryland Institute, College of Art and an MFA from the School of Visual Arts. She has received many grants and awards including a Pollock-Krasner Foundation award (2002), and a Mertz-Gilmore Foundation Dance Research Fellowship (2023). Current projects include Bachmann’s Knot, a permanent sculpture commission for the Stapleton Waterfront Park in NYC. DB lives in Staten Island, New York and is the co-founder of Makerspace NYC, a non-profit community workspace with locations in Staten Island and Brooklyn that give artists and craftspeople access to industrial and advanced manufacturing equipment and space to work.
DB’s studio is located at the Brooklyn Army Terminal in Makerspace Studios, Building A Unit 5N-1 and will also be open during the Sunset Park Open Studio weekend on Oct 17th and 18th from noon to 4 pm.
